How to Prepare for Your Ultrasound Appointment
An ultrasound scan (or sonography) uses high-frequency sound waves to create images of the inside of your body. Because it uses sound waves instead of radiation, it is incredibly safe. However, to get the clearest images possible, proper preparation is key.
Preparing for an Abdominal Ultrasound
If your doctor needs to look at your gallbladder, liver, pancreas, or spleen, you may be asked to fast (no eating or drinking) for at least 8 to 12 hours before the exam. Undigested food and gas in your stomach can block the sound waves, making the images blurry.
Preparing for a Pelvic or Pregnancy Ultrasound
For a pelvic scan, you need a full bladder. The liquid in your bladder acts as a window, allowing the ultrasound waves to pass through easily and create a clear picture of your uterus and ovaries. You will usually be asked to drink 3-4 glasses of water an hour before the test and refrain from using the restroom.
General Tips
Wear loose, comfortable clothing. Depending on the area being scanned, you may be asked to change into a gown. If you have any questions before your appointment, our friendly reception staff at Advik Diagnostics is always happy to help.
